Many small and medium-sized manufacturers have convinced themselves that automation is something for larger companies with deeper pockets. It’s an understandable assumption given the stories of cost overruns and automation projects collecting dust that have circulated at industry gatherings in the past. But it’s also an outdated assumption that is becoming increasingly difficult to justify.
That’s because automation is about making better use of every resource a shop has: skilled workers, machine tools, cutting tools, energy and floor space. For manufacturers facing labour shortages, rising energy costs and growing competitive pressure, automation is shifting from a competitive advantage to a business necessity.
The biggest misconception is that automation requires massive investments. Increasingly, today’s solutions are modular, scalable and designed specifically for smaller operations. Quebec-based Allegiant 3D, whose automation story is in this issue, proves the point. Instead of purchasing additional machining centres to meet demand, the company integrated a compact robotic automation cell with its existing five-axis machine. The result was more than 500 hours of unattended machining and a 50% increase in weekly throughput—all without adding shifts or expanding its workforce.
Robotics, however, are only part of the story. Smart tooling, connected sensors and real-time process monitoring are bringing intelligence directly to the cutting edge. These technologies detect vibration, excessive cutting forces and tool wear before they result in scrap, broken tools or costly downtime. They also make unattended machining more reliable by enabling machines to recognize problems and respond automatically, allowing skilled machinists to oversee more work while giving less experienced operators greater confidence.
